St. Mary's Residence

History and Mission

St. Mary’s Residence is owned and operated by the Daughters of Divine Charity (FDC). It was the first American foundation of the FDC’s who arrived from Hungary in 1913.

The community moved to several different locations over the years. In 1966, the present building, capable of accommodating 152 residents, was completed.

Women continuing their education, beginning their professional careers, or interning in New York City are accepted.

As actively apostolic religious we are impelled by unconditional love of God and imbued with the Charism of our Foundress, Mother Franziska Lechner, to “make God’s love visible” to all.

St. Mary's Residence, conducted by the Congregation of the Daughters of Divine Charity,
provides a temporary home for young professional women and students.

Conveniently located in the heart of residential East Side Manhattan,
St. Mary's Residence can be easily reached by bus, subway or taxi, from
railroad stations, airline terminals and other points.  Several Churches,
shopping facilities, educational and recreational centers are nearby.
Central Park and The Metropolitan Museum of Art are within walking distance.

The rooms are private and are reasonably furnished with
a bed, desk, chair, closet and sink.
The phones in the rooms are for incoming calls, connected through the switchboard,
from 8:00AM to 10:00PM.  Voice mail service is available.
Private phone lines may be activated in the rooms for Internet access.
Free wireless Internet access is available in the first floor visitor's lounge during designated hours.
Each floor has a lounge with cable T.V. and a kitchenette (stove, microwave, toaster and refrigerator),
laundry room, shower room and ladies room.

Maid service is provided once a week in the rooms and common areas are cleaned daily.

The rooms are air conditioned during the summer months.

There is 24-hour security service.

Rates are subject to change
Short Term: 2 - 11 weeks = $275.00 per week
Long Term: 3 months + (or longer) = $252.00 per week + 272.00 deposit

We accept credit cards and debit cards using auto pay.

Residents must be between 18 and 40 years of age and working or attending school.

Two weeks (14 days) notice of departure is required.

Residents are permitted to have a T.V. (there is no cable access in the rooms) and a small refrigerator.
Bed linens and cooking utensils are NOT provided.

**  Bicycles, microwaves, toasters, hotplates, halogen lamps, candles, furniture and pets are not permitted.  **
Smoking, alcohol and all illegal substances are forbidden.

Visitors are permitted between 9:00 AM and 11:00 PM.
Male visitors and those under the age of 18 are not permitted beyond the first floor.

The accommodations provided are not subject to rent control and rent stabilization laws.
Occupancy may be terminated upon 14 (fourteen) days notice.
